Reduce sway in your Halo Pole: only raise the sections you need
A steadier pole means better control at the tip — and a calmer rescue for the koala.
If you have ever run a telescopic rescue pole up to full height and watched the top wander in the breeze, you already know the single biggest enemy of a clean canopy retrieval: sway. The good news is that most of it is avoidable, and the fix costs you nothing but a moment of assessment before you deploy.
Why tall poles sway
A telescopic pole is thinnest at the top, and those slim upper sections are where nearly all the flex lives. Two things stack up against you as the pole goes higher. First, the tip sections are the least stiff. Second — and this is the one people underestimate — a pole’s flex grows with roughly the cube of its extended length. Double the free-standing height and you don’t double the wander; you multiply it many times over. That is why a pole that feels rock-solid at chest height can feel like a fishing rod at full stretch.
The technique: match the height to the koala
Before you raise the pole, read the rescue. Where is the animal actually sitting? For a great many descents you do not need every section — and the sections you can leave stowed are exactly the thin, whippy ones at the top.
Leave the top sections collapsed and extend only the rest. In our own free-standing field testing, keeping the top two sections down and running the pole up on the lower sections alone produced a big, immediately obvious drop in sway. You lose a little reach; you gain a pole you can actually hold steady and place with intent.
Decide before you raise it, not after. With a flip-lock telescopic pole the extension is set as you deploy from the top down — so choose your working height while the pole is still short, extend only to what the rescue needs, and lock off. If you find you need the extra reach, bring it fully down and redeploy rather than fighting a fully-extended pole.
Why it works
You are removing the two effects that hurt you most at the same time. Stowing the top sections takes the least-stiff part of the pole out of play, and shortening the deployed length pulls hard on that cube-law relationship. A shorter, lower-jointed column is dramatically stiffer than a fully-run one — so the tip stops nodding, the halo sits where you put it, and you can keep the standoff distance the method calls for.
That control is not just about comfort. A steady halo held at a 30–60 cm standoff is what lets a koala read the cue and choose to move down calmly. A wandering tip makes the whole rescue harder to read, for you and for the koala.
Steadier-pole checklist
- Read the koala’s height before you extend anything.
- Extend from the base up; leave the top sections stowed unless you genuinely need the reach.
- Keep your grip low and let the base take the load — these poles are held free-standing, not leaned.
- If you need more height, fully collapse and redeploy rather than adjusting at full stretch.
- Work to a 30–60 cm halo standoff — steadiness is what makes that distance holdable.
