Reduce sway in your Halo Pole: only raise the sections you need

A steadier pole means better control at the tip — and a calmer rescue for the koala.

If you have ever run a telescopic rescue pole up to full height and watched the top wander in the breeze, you already know the single biggest enemy of a clean canopy retrieval: sway. The good news is that most of it is avoidable, and the fix costs you nothing but a moment of assessment before you deploy.

Why tall poles sway

A telescopic pole is thinnest at the top, and those slim upper sections are where nearly all the flex lives. Two things stack up against you as the pole goes higher. First, the tip sections are the least stiff. Second — and this is the one people underestimate — a pole’s flex grows with roughly the cube of its extended length. Double the free-standing height and you don’t double the wander; you multiply it many times over. That is why a pole that feels rock-solid at chest height can feel like a fishing rod at full stretch.

The technique: match the height to the koala

Before you raise the pole, read the rescue. Where is the animal actually sitting? For a great many descents you do not need every section — and the sections you can leave stowed are exactly the thin, whippy ones at the top.

Leave the top sections collapsed and extend only the rest. In our own free-standing field testing, keeping the top two sections down and running the pole up on the lower sections alone produced a big, immediately obvious drop in sway. You lose a little reach; you gain a pole you can actually hold steady and place with intent.

Field tip

Decide before you raise it, not after. With a flip-lock telescopic pole the extension is set as you deploy from the top down — so choose your working height while the pole is still short, extend only to what the rescue needs, and lock off. If you find you need the extra reach, bring it fully down and redeploy rather than fighting a fully-extended pole.

Why it works

You are removing the two effects that hurt you most at the same time. Stowing the top sections takes the least-stiff part of the pole out of play, and shortening the deployed length pulls hard on that cube-law relationship. A shorter, lower-jointed column is dramatically stiffer than a fully-run one — so the tip stops nodding, the halo sits where you put it, and you can keep the standoff distance the method calls for.

That control is not just about comfort. A steady halo held at a 30–60 cm standoff is what lets a koala read the cue and choose to move down calmly. A wandering tip makes the whole rescue harder to read, for you and for the koala.

Steadier-pole checklist

  • Read the koala’s height before you extend anything.
  • Extend from the base up; leave the top sections stowed unless you genuinely need the reach.
  • Keep your grip low and let the base take the load — these poles are held free-standing, not leaned.
  • If you need more height, fully collapse and redeploy rather than adjusting at full stretch.
  • Work to a 30–60 cm halo standoff — steadiness is what makes that distance holdable.

The next generation of Halo Poles: thicker, longer, stronger

We took everything the field told us about sway and engineered it out of the pole itself.

The technique above is a great habit for the poles already in the field. But we wanted a pole that stands steady at full extension, so a rescuer never has to trade reach for control. After a season of feedback from carers running our poles free-standing at height, the next generation of the SAFE Halo Pole is built around three changes — all aimed squarely at sway.

Top section
Thicker
A larger-diameter tip — the thin top was the main source of wander. Stiffness climbs with the cube of diameter, so a modest increase roughly doubles the tip’s stiffness for almost no added weight.
Sections
Fewer & longer
Fewer, longer sections mean fewer joints. Every joint is a place a pole can flex and develop play over its life — so fewer of them means a stiffer, more predictable pole.
Carbon
Stronger
A higher-strength carbon layup adds durability and stiffness without the weight penalty rescuers feel when they hold a pole aloft.

Same reach. A completely different feel at the top.

The working heights you rely on are unchanged — this is not a shorter pole. What changes is what happens when you run it all the way up. A fatter tip and fewer joints mean the wander that used to build above head height is engineered out, so the pole stays steady, controlled and predictable at full stretch. You get to keep both your reach and your control.

There is an honest trade we are happy to name: fewer, longer sections pack down a little longer for transport. In our testing that was a trade worth making every time — a pole you can hold dead-steady at height is worth a few centimetres in the vehicle.

SAFE at the National Koala Conference

Port Macquarie, July 2026 — three days among the people who do this work.

We brought the Halo Pole to the National Koala Conference and spent three days among the carers, rescuers, researchers and rehabilitators who spend their weekends under gum trees. The interest in a purpose-built tool for the approved halo method was genuinely heartening — and the feedback was even more valuable.

A highlight was our golden-ticket prize winner, Kelly Roche of DEECCW, whose project “Holding the Line” begins the following month. With two years of funding behind it, the project will fit 200 koalas with monitoring collars and give them regular health checks — working to stop chlamydia spreading from an infected southern population into a still-healthy population further north. It’s exactly the kind of work SAFE is here to back.

We were also proud to donate a Halo Pole to Koala Conservation Australia for their work in the field.

The clearest signal from the weekend: the people doing this work care deeply about koala welfare, and many were especially keen on the halo attachment itself. What is the halo method for koala rescue?

The halo (or flagging) pole is an approved technique under Queensland’s Code of Practice for encouraging a koala to move down from the canopy. A padded hoop is raised near the animal as a gentle “above” cue, prompting it to descend on its own terms. The SAFE Halo Pole is the first purpose-built commercial product made specifically for that already-approved method.

Why does a telescopic rescue pole sway?

Two reasons stack up: the top sections of any telescopic pole are the thinnest and least stiff, and a pole’s flex increases with roughly the cube of its extended length. Because SAFE poles are raised free-standing — held at the base rather than leaned against a surface — that flex shows up as sway at the tip when the pole is run to full height.
